After Thimmarusu and Ishq, the third notable release in Tollywood after the reopening of theatres is SR Kalyana Mandapam. Directed by debutant Sridhar Gade, this movie features Kiran Abbaravaram of Raja Varu Rani Garu fame and Priyanka Jawalkar of Taxiwaala fame in the lead roles. Senior actor Sai Kumar played a pivotal role in it. Amidst decent expectations, the movie has hit the screens today. Here is the review of it:
Story:
Dharma (Sai Kumar) is the owner of SR Kalyana Mandapam located in Rayachoti town of Kadapa district. Dharma is supposed to carry the legacy of his family business but instead, he ruins it with his lazy attitude. He is always looked down on by the villagers. Even his wife and son Kalyan (Kiran Abbavaram) don't like him. Over the course, the movie tries to showcase the tipsy topsy curve of Dharma and Kalyan's relationship.
Performances:
Kiran Abbavaram proved his mettle with Raja Varu Rani Garu. He repeated the same feat with this movie as well. With SR Kalyana Mandapam, Kiran proved that he can pull off commercial hero roles quite well. It is good of him to choose varied kinds of scripts in the early stages of his career. Priyanka Jawalkar looks beautiful and did a decent job. The main pillar of this movie is Sai Kumar. It has been a long time since we saw him in a full-length role and when he got it, the actor used it to the fullest. The chemistry between Sai Kumar and Kiran Abbavaram is the major highlight of the movie. The rest of the cast has done justice to their roles.
Technical Aspects:
Kiran himself penned the story, screenplay, and dialogues of this movie. He blended the movie with all the necessary commercial elements but the execution is very bland. Director Sridhar Gade wasted his opportunity and failed to make an exciting narration. Thus, we get a feel of tasting old wine in a new bottle, while watching the movie. Music by Chaitan Bharadwaj is decent. The background score worked well in some of the scenes. The cinematography by Viswas Daniel is great. The visuals look stunning. The production values are equally good. The editing is clean.
Verdict:
SR Kalyana Mandapam banked on the commercial elements a lot but the team faltered in executing them effectively. The hero-heroine romantic track may attract the youth but is flat at its core. The climax portions between Sai Kumar and Kiran will click well due to the well-written emotional sequence. The first half of the film is good and runs smoothly but things go off-track in the second half. On the whole, SR Kalyana Mandapam works only in parts and may appeal to commercial movie buffs.
Plus Points:
- Performances of Sai Kumar and Kiran Abbavaram
- A couple of songs
- Father-son track
- Comedy in the first half
Minus Points:
- Lethargic second half
- Poorly-written romantic track
Final Verdict: SR Kalyana Mandapam turns out to be an average outing
