Suriya’s Kanguva had high expectations when it launched on November 14. It was promoted as Tamil cinema's answer to monumental hits like Baahubali and RRR. However, despite the anticipation and aggressive promotional efforts, its opening-day collection was less impressive than hoped.
According to trade reports, the domestic market saw approximately Rs 22 crore in day-one earnings, with Rs 13.65 crore from the Tamil version, Rs 5 crore from the Telugu version, and Rs 3.25 crore from the Hindi version.
The Hindi version underperformed despite around 1,000 3D screenings, achieving only 11.47% occupancy, while the 2D version saw 12.64%.
Similarly, the Telugu movie Matka faced a sluggish start at the box office, with an estimated collection of Rs 0.70 crore net on day one and projected earnings between Rs 80 lakh and Rs 1 crore in the Telugu states. Its worldwide gross stood at around Rs 1.2 crore, with a low theater occupancy of less than 20%.
