The poster of a performance documentary titled 'Kaali' has stirred a religious controversy in the country. Directed by Leena Manimekalai, this film's poster featured a lady smoking and holding an LGBTQ+ rainbow flag while she is in the getup of Goddess Kaali.
As soon as it was released, the poster raised a huge controversy on social media. People were furious to see the image of a lady smoking in Kaali's getup. Eventually, director Leena had to delete the post.
Meanwhile, Trinamul Congress MP, Mahua Moitra made a few comments defending the poster. In the India Today Conclave East 2022, Moitra said that it is up to people how to perceive gods. She said that for her, Kaali is a meat-eating and alcohol-accepting goddess.
"I, within Hinduism, being a Kali worshipper, have the right to imagine Kali in that way. That is my freedom," said Moitra. Her statement further raised the debate on social media. Many netizens were hurt by her words and demanded an apology from her.
