A routine rather one-time watch commercial film– Better don’t expect much (not even from the Powerstar)
Plot:
Katamarayudu (Pawan Kalyan) is an indomitable force and head of a village living his four brothers Konda Babu (Ajay), Janardhan (Sivabalaji), Kamal Kamaraj, Chaitanya & his friend Linga Babu (Ali). Katamarayudu already makes foes like Radia (Pradeep Rawat) due to his righteousness. Scared of revealing their love stories to his anti-women brother (Katamarayudu), the four brothers plan to heave him into love and bring Avanthi (Shruti Haasan) into his life and eventually succeed too. Unlike Katamarayudu’s family, Avanthi and her father Bhupati (Nassar) are peace lovers which brings new problems for Katamarayudu. How did he stand all odds to safeguard Bhupati& family from an unknown enemy and win back his love forms the crux of the story.
Performances:
Pawan Kalyan: Besides a fact that the Powerstar is a sheer feast to watch in terms of his look, comic timing and acting performance, the songs and his dances were terrible – honestly!
Shruti Haasan: Thanks to the most glamorous Shruti– we could bear the songs. Btw did she have a substantial character to play?! We didn’t realize that!
There is no major villain to actually talk. However Pradeep Rawat & Tarun Arora takes a namesake mention.
But Rao Ramesh’s character is value addition to the plot and he was as usually at his best. His impeccable blend of villainy and comedy reminds us of his legendary father (late) Rao Gopal Rao garu.
While Ajay’s character and performance was cute, Siva Balaji-Kamal Kamaraj & Chaitanya were cool enough as younger brothers.
How can we forget Mr Ali who is the main “Katravalli” of Katamarayudu. He plays ‘Lingababu’– the sidekick of the hero and we know he is the best.
Analysis:
For all those who are unaware of, Katamarayudu is an official remake of Tamil commercial hit Veeram starring Ajith and Tamannaah.
Set in a rural backdrop, it is a film of a violent hero trying to mend his ways for his love interest but cannot– of course due to the villain.
Katamarayudu tried to be distinct remake with some creative modifications brought onboard but in short, the execution falls flat for this much anticipate mass entertainer.
Keeping aside comparisons with the original, Katamarayudu tries to be a cool romantic drama with some good scenes and engaging screenplay in the first half. Scenes between Pawan Kalyan, Ali, his brother troop and Shruti Haasan work really well and play a crucial part.
Though the pre-interval action sequence was in fact a goof up in terms of impactful choreography, the scene value and context along with the background score (not anywhere close to the original) saves it from being a debacle.
Getting back to the second half with some expectations, we notice the director losing grip over the second half. Forced characters, emotions, undefined links, inadept execution of comedy/conflict/action sequence do the major damage bigtime. After the fight-song-fight loop, there comes the C.L.I.M.A.X! “Oh Shucks! This is Veeram’s remake kada… let’s bring in the background score for some IMPACT but use it with some mutations”– we are not sure if this is what they thought before conceiving the climax but BIG THUMBS DOWN folks!
Merits:
- Engaging First half
- Performances of PK, Ali, Rao Ramesh
- Shruti Haasan’s glamor
De-merits:
- Both writing and execution of the Second Half
- Poor Action sequences & No WOW elements to relish at all
Music:
Anup Rubens did surprise us with a folk tinge in this album. However, songs were such a deviation and the Powerstar undoubtedly ruined them with his namesake performance (We bet you’ll agree after watching the film).
Others:
Nothing special to mention
Verdict:
Katamarayudu is a routine rather one-time watch commercial film. Despite being an unimpressive remake, with a pleasing first half and disappointing second half, the film misses the ‘ENJOYABLE’ status by a distance. However, Powerstar makes it a passable affair and diehard fans might simply enjoy it!
