Kadhanayakudu story at a glance

Pedda Manushulu (1954) was the first Telugu Film which came in the backdrop of Politics and was quite successful. After 15 years, it was Kadhanayakudu which came in similar backdrop. Another interesting aspect is that- the lead actors Sr.NTR and Jayalalitha did not begin their stint in politics during this film’s release. Nobody even imagined they would venture out to politics and become chief ministers of neighboring states. This film has strong satirical take on the political scenario of that age. Jayalitha offered good mass appeal in the first half with her glamor and a challenging role in the second half. This film was remade in Tamil as Namnaadu (MGR and Jayalalitha) and in Hindi as Apna Desh (Rajesh Khanna, Mumtaz)and was highly successful. The trend of Mullapudi’s witty dialogues in the film continued with films like Mutyala Muggu and Mana Oori Paandavulu which came later.

Story Details:
There existed a gullible village where people are exploited by some powerful group of men. The head of these wrongdoers is  Dayanandam (Nagabhushanam) and his right hand Satyamurthy (Mikkilineni) a prominent contractor. Another cruel guy who does backbiting and aids these people is Appadu (Allu Ramalingaiah) a ration shop dealer. These people get into every crime to exploit the innocent village such as murders, corruption and what not.Saradhi (Sr.NTR) is one confident young man who decides to stop these wrongdoings. He is an idealist and doesn’t spare any sort of injustice. He tries to stop every crime committed by this group and Dayanandam tries his best to get Saradhi under their group. They impose pressure on Saradhi ‘s brother Srinavasa Rao (Dhulipalla) but fail. A rift happens between Saradhi and his brother. When Saradhi is out of the house, he meets a fruit vendor Jaya (Jayalitha) and a group of hardworkers. Meanwhile, municipal elections come up and Saradhi establishes a political party. He wins with thumping majority and Saradhi becomes the chairperson of the party. But the villains plan to create a rift in Saradhi’s party and the rest of the story deals with how Saradhi and Jaya plan to teach a lesson to them.

Performances:
Sr.NTR is highly believable as the idealist youngster who dreams of getting a change in the country. His chemistry with co-star Jayalalitha works quite well. Jayalalitha is excellent as the fruit vendor who supports the hero in every action. Nagabhushanam does a brilliant job as Dayanandam and Mikkilineni is apt for the role of Satyamurthy.  Dhulipalla is adequate as the hero’s brother and Allu Ramalingaiah is perfect as Appadu. The comedy track between Raja Babu, Padmanabham and Raavikondala Rao offers good relief.

Technical Aspects:
Mullapudi Venkataramana’s story and Bhamidipati Radhakrishna’s dialogues act as main lifeline for this political drama. T.V.Raju’s melodious music is another highlight.  Manchi Vaadu Ma Babai, Mutyala Jallu Kurise, Inthenaya Telusukovaya became good hits. It is interesting to note that there is no duet between the lead actors Sr.NTR and Jayalalitha in this film.
