Iddaru Ammayilu story at a glance

Vanisri got the complete opportunity to show her best in acting skills through this film. She excelled in two contrasting roles – one being a poor woman from a simple background and another being a rich woman with modern ideas. Apart from Vainsri, veteran character actress Ramaprabha got a good name in this film as well. Legendary playback singer SPB sang ‘Naa Hrudayapu Kovelalo’ for ANR for the first time in his playback singing career. It was supposed to be sung by Ghantasala originally but due to his ill health, SPB was asked to sing the track version of it so that shooting can commence.  The filmmakers wanted to replace the track version with Ghantasala’s version but it didn’t happen. When Ghantasala himself heard it, he appreciated Balu’s version and asked the filmmakers to retain it with a magnanimous heart.

Story Details:
Bhanu and Chandra (Vanisri) are two different people from different backgrounds but look exactly the same. The reason for it because their mothers are twin sisters. Bhanu’s father Narayana (SVR) is a retired engineer with good influence in the town. Bhanu is an ultra modern woman who doesn’t bother about traditions and superstitions. She is a typical college girl who finds it fun to tease guys. She poses a bet with her friends that she will make a celibate research scholar bachelor Sriram (Sobhan Babu) fall in love with her. She achieves the same and rejects him. Unable to bear the insult, Sriram writes a letter and leaves to commit suicide.
Chandra’s father  Ramanujan (Gummadi) is a poor man who works as an assistant in a textile shop. As his wife dies, he marries another woman Sundaramma (Suryakantham). She is a very arrogant woman who shows hell to Ramanujan as well as Chandra. Sundramma has an ignorant daughter Hema (Ramaprabha) who doesn’t have worldly knowledge despite coming of age.

Cut from there..
Madhu (ANR) is the son of an affluent gentleman Lakshmana Rao (Nagaiah). Madhu is a gold medalist in Agricultural Bsc and instead of going for job he does agriculture in advanced techniques in his hometown Kondapuram. Narayana plans to marry Bhanu to Madhu. But Bhanu doesn’t like a rural match of that sort but her father tries to convince. Narayana even gives his daughter’s photo to Madhu. Sriram incidentally happens to be a friend of Madhu and Madhu even helps the former for his education. When Madhu comes to know about Sriram’s suicide, he visits the latter’s room. He gets shocked to see Bhanu’s photo there with the footnote as “The lover who cheated me”.  Madhu decides to teach a strong lesson to Bhanu who has ruined his friend’s life and now coming into his life. Meanwhile, Sundaramma plans to get Chandra married to her nephew (Raja Babu) . She joins hands with her brother (Allu Ramalingaiah) and even makes arrangements for the wedding. Chandra comes to her cousin Bhanu and tells about this forcible plan. At the same time Bhanu’s father plans to take her to Madhu’s house in the village. It is then Bhanu devises a clever plan of exchanging her role with Chandra and promises Chandra that her forcible marriage will break. Madhu mistakes Chandra to be Bhanu and troubles her in every stage. An innocent Chandra doesn’t understand why Madhu is doing this. Once Madhu corners Chandra and questions her about the death of Sriram. Chandra cries and says she doesn’t know anything. Madhu gets convinced that Chandra is innocent and falls for her. Meanwhile Bhanu spoils the wedding planned by Sundaramma and happens to see Madhu’s photo in newspaper about his agricultural research. Bhanu falls in love with Madhu and when time comes for her to get back to her original role, Chandra’s father dies.  Meanwhile, Chandra realizes that Bhanu also loves Madhu and decides to sacrifice her love and leaves for the railway station. Madhu looks at Chandra in the station and gets surprised to see her after seeing her in the home itself. He immediately realizes something is wrong. Bhanu bursts out on Madhu about the role exchange drama and agrees it was her mistake Sriram died. She also goes off emotionally to die but she is stopped by Sriram- who explains her that he was rescued by fishermen when he jumped into a lake. The film ends on a happy note with the marriages of Bhanu- Sriram and Chandra- Madhu.

Performances:
Vanisri is fantastic in two contrasting roles- Bhanu and Chandra. It was indeed a difficult task for an actress to portray such full length roles in equal perfection. ANR is wonderful as Madhu- an educated youth, a great friend and a good willed lover.  ANR’s fantastic chemistry with Vanisri was evident with this film itself. Sobhan Babu gets an important role as the second hero Sriram. He shares a good chemistry with Vanisri. Ramaprabha gets a nice role as an ignorant woman and her role in K.Vishwanath’s O Seetha Kadha- which came 5 years later also has similar shades. Suryakantham gets a typical role as an arrogant lady. Gummadi and SVR are brilliant in father roles for Chandra and Bhanu respectively. Allu Ramalinagiah and Raja Babu are good in their roles.

Technical Aspects:
Though the film is adapted from Kannada, D.V. Narasaraju did a good job in making it native for Telugu Audiences. K.V. Mahadevan’s melodious music is a treat for an entertaining film of this sort.  ‘Amma Puvvu Lo’,’Na Hrudayapu Kovelalo’ became good hits. Direction by S.R.Puttanna is entertaining as well as good in technical values.
