Manchi Manasulu story at a glance
During the Golden Era of Telugu Cinema, Manchi Manasulu gave a sentiment oriented role for Shaavukaru Janaki. It fetched her a great name as an actress. She excelled as a blind woman, wife of the hero ANR who doesn’t get his admiration in the beginning but later gains his love. Her performance was greatly received by the audience.
Story Details:
In the midst of a village backdrop, there existed a potter (Gummadi). He has a younger brother (ANR) – the hero and a daughter (Vasanthi). The potter works hard to make his younger brother study in the city. When the latter doesn’t have money to pay for hostel fee, a lawyer (SVR) and his daughter (Savitri) rescue him in time. They even offer him an accommodation to stay in their house. But the lawyer’s wife (Suryakantham) refuses saying it is not possible to allow a bachelor stay. As a result, they say he is married and let him stay in the room. Meanwhile he falls in love with Lawyer’s daughter. Just when things go smoothly, he gets a news from his village that his brother is fatally ill. His brother asks to look after the daughter and get her married to a guy whom she loved (Nagabhushanam), and sadly dies. The lover keeps a condition that our hero should marry his blind sister(Shaavukaru Janaki) and only then he would marry the potter’s daughter. The hero struggles between devotion towards his brother and his love. Lawyer’s daughter understands the hero’s condition and they decide to sacrifice their love. The hero marries the blind girl and despite marrying her he cannot stay with her with goodwill. He gets irritated with his wife’s presence. But Lawyer’s daughter comes for the blind girl’s help and tells the hero not to behave so. The hero changes and becomes caring towards his wife. The couple visit Hampi on a trip and the blind girl becomes a sole witness for a murder done by her own brother. The guilt is thrown on the hero and the lawyer’s daughter takes up the case. The blind girl becomes an important witness and the story ends on happy note with the hero coming out of jail proven innocent.
Performances:
ANR is excellent as the lover, a considerate brother, caring husband and later an innocent man who gets in traps of a crime. His performance in emotional scenes and songs are brilliant. He shares a brilliant chemistry with Shaavukaru Janaki. Savitri is adorable as the individualistic woman who knows what she is doing. She doesn’t link up personal life with justice by taking up the case of the hero. Shaavukaru Janaki gets a challenging role as a blind woman who becomes a sole witness for the crime. It is indeed a difficult deglamorized role for her and she excels in every scene. Nagabhushanam is fantastic as the villain with unique dialogue delivery and acting. SVR, Gummadi, Suryakantham get pivotal roles to play in the film.
Technical Aspects:
Dialogues by Athreya strike the chord in the right place. His words in emotional scenes involving ANR and Savitri are a treat. No wonder why he is called Manasu Kavi for the brilliant lines he uses based on the situation. K.V.Mahadevan’s melodious music is the strongest pillar for the film with amazing songs like ‘Mama Mama Mama, ‘Nannu Vodhili Neevu Poolevule’, ‘Entha Takkari Vadu Naa Raju’, ‘Emandoi Sreevaru’, ‘Oho Oho Paavurama’ becoming super hits. However, it is the greatest song ‘Silalapai Silpalu’ which became a jewel in Telugu Film Songs. The song describes about the grandeur of Vijayanagara Empire and Hampi.
