Manchu Pallaki story at a glance

Telugu Cinema is not devoid of tragedies and sad love stories from the times immemorial. But 80s era saw a new style of such tragedy films thanks to Vamshi’s first film Manchu Pallaki. The protagonists are completely fresh and new on the silver screen, with never before seen histrionics and youthfulness. Naturally, for the audience who were so used to watch senior artists like ANR, Sr.NTR in youngster roles, this came by a thrill. This film marks the debut of a fantastic director with artistic touch- Vamshi, who made some phenomenal films with his own mark later for more than a decade- and still continues to enthrall audience with his unique view.  In fact, Vamshi worked as an assistant director under Kala Tapasvi K.Vishwanath for epic film Shankarabharanam earlier, but this first film of his proved that he had an own viewpoint of how to make a successful film. Manchu Pallaki rocked the youth of the 80s for the realistic characters and Suhasini’s graceful presence as the female lead. It is a remake of Tamil film  Paalaivana Cholai released in 1981.

Story Details:
Sekhar (Chiranjeevi), Hari (Rajendra Prasad) , Vasu (Narayana Rao) along with his two more friends are an unemployed youth residing in a colony. Sekhar is a straightforward guy who gives lot of value to ideals and doesn’t hesitate to question wrongdoings. Meanwhile Geetha (Suhasini), is a joyful young woman who moves to the colony along with her father. These youngsters play pranks on her initially but it backfires with her smart presence of mind. In fact, all of them secretly fall for her and try to undermine others plans to impress her. However, it is Sekhar who has deep admiration for Geetha and one fine day he expresses his love to her. But a shocking reaction comes from Geetha saying that she is suffering from a terminal disease and will die soon. Sekhar is left heartbroken and with Geetha’s insistence, he marries Vasu’s sister. Geetha tries to reform all the youngsters with utmost care and concern and the film ends on a sad note with her demise, despite being happy till the last breath.

Performances:
Suhasini is the heart and soul of the film with her unfaltering smile and youthful presence. Though she looks traditional in the first look, this doesn’t make her too innocent or gullible. Her smartness was shown perfectly on the screen in every frame. She is quite a matured woman of her age and Suhasini outperformed all her co-stars with her acting in this film.  Chiranjeevi bags a memorable role as Sekhar, the representation of frustrated youth of the 80s. This film paved way for Chiranjeevi to star in many such films later- such as Subhalekha, Vijetha , Manthri Gari Viyyankudu which featured him as the fearless youth. Rajendra Prasad is excellent in his youthful role with interesting histrionics and fun element. Narayana Rao is decent as the funny friend.

Technical Aspects:
Story for the film was penned by Rajasekhar and dialogues are by popular novelist Yandamuri Veerendranath. In fact the title Manchu Pallaki was suggested by himself. The dialogues are very witty and this film marked the association of this novelist with Chiranjeevi- in which many successful films came in their combination. Music by Rajan- Nagendra is the main lifeline of the film with eternal songs like Meghama Dehama, Manase Manideepam and Pagalu Reyilo Jaarakamundhe became anthems of the 80s.
