Balipeetham story at a glance
After Dr.Chakravarthy was made as a film based on a novel called Chakrabhramanam, the trend of making films based on women novel writers began in Telugu Cinema. Most of these stories were based on two glamorous lead characters and the beautiful world they are in. In contrast to such escapist approach, Ranaganayakamma wrote a novel called Balipeetham which dealt with real life problems in the World and a controversial storyline. This novel was adapted for feature film by Dasari Narayana Rao with few additional changes and modifications. The already popular pair Sobhan Babu- Sarada were chosen for the lead roles in this. While taking a popular novel for a film itself is a tough job, making it a feature film without hurting the sentiments of any section of the society is another challenging task. Dasari handled this hard job with poise and intelligence.
Story Details:
Bhaskar (Sobhan Babu) is an idealist in attitude. He believes that service to humankind is like service to god. Despite being born in Nimna caste, he has great values and ideals in life. Aruna (Sarada) is a woman from a forward caste and is in last stages of her life. Bhaskar comes forward to fulfill her last wish of dying as a married woman and marries her. With the good companionship of Bhaskar, Aruna’s health improves. Even the doctors who treat her get surprised with the improvement. Aruna and Bhaskar also have kids. The story goes through many twists and turns later. In the situation when Aruna had to live with Bhaskar’s family, the former finds it hard to adjust. She despises the eating habits, language and lifestyle of Bhaskar’s family and shows her superiority of forward caste over them. As a result, rift occurs between Bhaskar and Aruna. Meanwhile, Bhaskar’s sister Kamala (Roja Ramani) marries a good gentleman (Raj Babu) beyond the boundaries of caste and creed. The gentleman respects the living and lifestyle of Kamala. This acts as a huge lesson for Aruna. To make things worse, her earlier illness comes back. She even goes near death in this process. It is when Bhaskar’s family members whom she despises earlier come for her rescue and do service to her. Aruna realizes that emotions like sympathy, concern, and love are beyond any caste and creed created by the World. She apologizes to her husband and the story ends on a happy note.
Performances:
Sobhan Babu is believable as the idealist hero with his balanced histrionics. He gave a masterful performance as Bhaskar who struggles with his wife later. Sarada is fantastic as Aruna who is strong in her ideals and giving value to her caste and birth. Her performance as a realized wife in the climax is commendable. Roja Ramani is decent as the sister of the hero. Raj Babu is good as the idealistic gentleman who marries Kamala.
Technical Aspects:
The complete credit of Balipeetham as a successful film goes to Dasari for his dare in taking such a tough subject for film. The film has very less commercial aspects and deals with serious issues like caste feelings. But he made it dramatically entertaining to watch. Music by Chakravarthy is like a whiff of fresh air for a serious subject of this sort. Kusalama Neeku Kushalamena sung by SPB and Susheela was brilliantly penned by legendary lyricist Devulapalli. This song can be termed as one of the most melodious duets ever composed in Telugu Cinema. Maha Kavi Sri Sri’s Kalasi Paadudham Telugu Paata Kadhali Saagudham Velugu Baata is an aggressive anthem depicting the self respect of Telugu people.
