Bhakta Tukaram story at a glance
After beginning her career in vamp oriented roles, Anjali Devi rose to prominence with roles demanding glamor and great looks. Later, she ventured into roles which needed sympathy, sentiment and the like. After the success of devotional Epic Lava Kusa, she was flocked with such roles. She earned great name in films like Sati Sakkubai and Sati Sumathi. Later Anjali Devi along with her husband Adi Narayana Rao decided to make Bhakta Tukaram starring ANR in the lead role. Comedian Padmanabham also wanted to make the same story with ANR in the lead. But with ANR’s insistence, the chance was taken by Anjali Productions House. It is interesting to see Anjali Devi in a role which had more practicality compared to the typical role of a housewife to a devotee husband. Her character is always worried and concerned about her husband’s well being and worries about the family’s future. In fact her role is more sensible than the innocent lead role.
Story Details:
Tukaram (ANR) belongs to a remote village in Maharashtra and a great devotee of Panduranga. He is a principled gentleman who never breaks rules. He even writes some kritis called Abhangs in the name of Panduranga. His wife (Anjali Devi) is more concerned about the family issues. The guru (Nagabhushanam) in the town doesn’t like Tukaram. He makes the villagers against Tukaram by speaking ill of the latter. He even makes a prostitute (Kanchana) to trap Tukaram. But Tukaram is such a great devotee that he rescues Chatrapathi Sivaji (Sivaji Ganesan) and happens to get the journey to heavens in the prestigious Pushpaka Vimanam.
Performances:
ANR is phenomenal in the role of staunch devotee Tukaram. Being an atheist in real life, ANR displayed great histrionics and humble performance as an obsessed devotee. His performance in emotional scenes and songs is worth watching. Anjali Devi steals the show as the concerned wife of Tukaram with fantastic histrionics and emotional turmoil. Sivaji Ganesan stuns the audience with his brilliant portrayal as Chatrapati Sivaji.
