Govinda Govinda story at a glance
Govinda Govinda is an adventurous crime thriller in the backdrop of Tirupathi Venkateshwara Swami temple, the most popular pilgrimage center in the World. The film could be termed as one of the best from Ram Gopal Varma’s work because of its gripping portrayal of a crime story revolving around such a popular religious worship site. Sridevi’s graceful presence as a foreign tourist, Nagarjuna’s vivacious performance as the taxi driver , Jandhyala’s witty dialogues, and Raj-Koti’s melodious music added greatly to Ram Gopal Varma’s competent directional skills.
Story Details:
The film begins with a maharshi trying to get darshan of Lord Vishnu when he is in spending some quality time with his wife Goddess Lakshmi. When he is not permitted to meet the Lord, he gets furious and curses the Lord himself. After this mythological sequence, the film moves to Bangkok where an evil magician believes that the crown of Lord Venkateshwara in Tirupathi would fetch him great wealth and whatever he would yearn for. He sends a group of thieves headed by the head (Paresh Rawal) to finish the job. He seeks help of a local hypocrite saint (Kota Srinivasa Rao) in order to find out the temple timings and other details. Meanwhile, Naveena (Sridevi) is a happy go lucky tourist from Bangkok who arrives in Tirupathi for the Lord’s darshan. She bumps into Seenu (Nagarjuna), a free spirited young taxi driver who helps her in going around the town. After few misunderstandings and good tantrums, Seenu starts admiring the good nature of Naveena but feels scared to express his love due to the difference in their lifestyles. Seenu’s father works as a guard in the Tirumala temple and on one fine day he suffers from fever and tells Seenu to inform the temple authorities that he wouldn’t attend the duty. Seenu conveniently forgets to do so, as he is in grief about Naveena leaving the town. It is when the Bangkok thieves attack the temple in the most brutal way and the head priest ( Somayajulu) is also made unconscious by them. The only witness is a young priest boy who is a good friend of Seenu. Things go haywire when the golden crown of Lord Venkateshwara is stolen by the thieves and obviously, Seenu’s father is suspected for not being in duty. Seenu feels responsible for what all happened and he soon realizes his kid friend has witnessed who did the crime. Seenu along with the boy and CBI officer leave for Bangkok with a lead and the former contacts Naveena who resides there. Naveena lives in Bangkok with her grandmother (Suryakantham) and uncle (Sudhakar). Rest of the film is about the many twists and turns Seenu and Naveena face in order to get the prestigious golden crown of Tirumala back to its place.
Performances:
Sridevi is the heart and soul of the film with her tremendous screen presence in every frame she appears. She looks extremely beautiful in songs and her chemistry with Nagarjuna works wonders. Her innocent histrionics as a naïve foreign tourist in India were brilliantly shown. Her appearance in songs is another highlight. She does great in action sequences as well. Nagarjuna is extremely believable as the free spirited Seenu and looks great in his casual dressing style. This film can be definitely termed as one of his unique performances in showing sensitive emotions. Paresh Rawal is phenomenal as the funny villain with ruthless attitude. Kota Srinivasa Rao does a brilliant job in the role of a hypocritical religious man who helps Paresh Rawal in the theft but feels guilty for doing so. Suryakantham generates great laughs as the grandmother of Naveena. Sudhakar is good as the funny relative of Naveena. Somayajulu makes his presence felt as the head priest of Tirupathi temple.
