The basic storyline of the film has been adapted from earlier B.N.Reddy film of the same name released in 1941.
Story Details:
Lalitha (Sridevi) is a doting younger sister of Janaki (Jayaprada) who is looked after by the latter because they don’t have parents. Her sister dreams of making Lalitha well educated and make her settled properly in life. In short, their relationship is more like mother and daughter instead of sisters. Narasayya (Rao Gopala Rao) is a village head who solves the disputes of the place. Janaki is an earthly woman who is very helpful for everyone in the village with her goodwill. Kamesam (Mohan Babu) is a wrong doer who goes around women and tries to flirt with Lalitha while going to college. Ram Babu (Sobhan Babu) is a lawyer who studies in the city and returns to the village. He feels very indebted to Janaki for looking after his mother during his studies. Ram Babu falls for Lalitha in some dramatic circumstances. Meanwhile, Lalitha also starts admiring the good nature of Ram Babu and misunderstands his friendly intentions towards her. When Lalitha comes to know that her elder sister Janaki loves Ram Babu and the village people agreed for the match, she decides it is time to sacrifice her love. Lalitha even marries the wrong doer Kamesam and comes in front of her sister. She does this so that Ram Babu would be devastated and marries her sister instead. Ram Babu gets shocked to know about this marriage and pleads Lalitha to tell why she married him. Lalitha lies to Ram Babu saying she loved Kamesam and leaves the town in a train along with Kamesam. In a small fight, Kamesam kills a person and is jailed, thereby leaving Lalitha alone. Ram Babu on the other hand gets frustrated and marries Janaki and the couple is childless. Very soon, Ram Babu comes to know he has a son and the mother is none other than Lalitha. After many twists and turns, Janaki realizes the great sacrifice done by her sister for the former’s life.
Performances:
Sridevi is excellent in the role of Lalitha- she looks great as the playful young college student, a wonderful lover, and a sacrificing person. Her performance in emotional scenes is worth commending. She looks fantastic in the songs as well. Jayaprada rightfully compliments Sridevi with her balanced performance and great looks. Sobhan Babu is decent as the male lead who gets stuck between two women. Mohan Babu is interesting in the role of Kamesam who has a tinge of comedy mixed with evil. Rao Gopala Rao is adequate as the village head. Nirmalamma gets a good role as the grandmother of Mohan Babu’s character.
Technical Aspects:
Dialogues by Satyanand are well written and casual. They are easy for the audience to relate themselves with. Music by Chakravarthy was well suited for a commercial drama of this sort and the song Velluvocchi became an all time commercial hit. Raghavendra Rao’s direction is crisp and suitable for the commercial interests of Telugu Audience. Ramanaidu’s production values are decent for a social drama of this sort.
