Rudraveena was a thought provoking classic which came at a juncture when Chiranjeevi was heaped with stardom and commercial value- at the same time he was earning great name as an actor with films like Swayam Krushi and Subhalekha. In fact, he worked with director Balachander during his upcoming days in mostly negative characters but the duo shared a special rapport right from then. Rudraveena is special because it came from Chiranjeevi’s home production and showcased him sans star image- and a musician with responsibility for society and human values. The film touches many spheres of life such as- Classical Music, Casteism, Dance, Humanity. It mainly questions which is more important- whether enthralling art or a attending a dying person!
Story Details:
Rudraveena is a story of Suryam (Chiranjeevi) and his journey in life. Born in an orthodox Brahmin family, his father Bilahari Ganapathi Sastry (Gemini Ganesan) is a very strict person and a music guru to Suryam. While Suryam’s elder brother is a nadaswaram player- married to a considerate lady, Suryam learns singing from his father. The only problem Suryam has is that- he cannot tolerate injustice or suffering around him. He gets differences in this regard with his father because- Ganapathi Sastry is somebody who strictly believes Art is divine form and nothing should enter mind while performing it. Balachander shows this in just one song Tarali Raada- where Suryam sings the song in lighter vein by changing the notes of a carnatic raagam Hamsadhwani- suiting the likes of common workers. Things take a serious turn when Suryam loves Lalitha (Shobhana) a classical dancer of Harijan origin. The situations come in such a way that Suryam questions his father’s way of life and says he would want to transform the sufferings of the village. The father- son rift increases and the rest of the film is about whether Suryam would succeed in transforming the village- and gaining his father’s appreciation.
Performances:
Chiranjeevi is phenomenal as the lead role Suryam- who is a person of multiple shades. He excels in the role of classical singer with agony in heart- about the sufferings of people. He looks extremely believable as the character that people wouldn’t get reminded of the star Chiranjeevi at all! Shobhana is excellent as the love interest of Suryam and a classical dancer. Her role is brilliantly crafted- where a female lead is not just for songs and glamour; but has an important role in the story. Gemini Ganeshan is at his usual best as the staunch classical singer and a believer of caste and tradition. Devilalitha, Ramesh Arvind, Satyanarayana, Brahmanandam etc played some important roles in the film as well.
Technical Aspects:
K.Balachander is the undisputable reason for the brilliance of the film. Every character is so perfectly crafted that we don’t think again about their credibility. It was a challenge for him to show Chiranjeevi as the considerate individual role- after showing him in extreme negative characterizations in the previous films. Every frame makes the audience think about world- not just in the entertainment factor. Maestro Ilaiyaraaja’s music is another strong foundation for the film to be so artistically strong. Songs like Tarali Raada, Lalitha Priya Kamalam, Nammaku Nammaku, Cheppalani Undhi became all time hits. Ilaiyaraaja won the national award for best music in Telugu for this film. Sirivennela Sitarama Sastry wrote all the songs and one cannot forget the song “Randi Randi” - which became the anthem for every household in AP- to welcome their guests! The film is rich in production values and was shot in exotic locations –suiting the mood of it.
