There are very few films in Telugu Cinema which speak about determination, positive attitude and hard work for a person in life. Most importantly, it is rare to see a film which teaches lessons of life in an entertaining and thought provoking manner. One such film which came during the mid 80s was Swayam Krushi directed by K.Vishwanath. This is the second film from Kala Tapasvi with Chiranjeevi in the lead.
Story Details:
The story is about Sambaiah (Chiranjeevi), a poor cobbler and his journey in becoming a successful businessman with his hard work and determination. He even raises his elder sister’s kid after her demise. His brother in law (Charan Raj) is a bad guy who kills Sambiah’s sister and goes to jail. Meanwhile Ganga (Vijayashanti) has a great admiration towards Sambaiah, while the latter likes his relative Sarada( Sumalatha) and helps her in financing her education. But when Sarada loves her classmate Bhaskar (S.Benarjee) , Sambaiah is distraught and it is when he marries Ganga in dramatic circumstances. After Sambiah becomes successful entrepreneur, he comes to know his brother in law is out of jail and is trying to influence his nephew- in bad ways. Sambaiah and Ganga are the ones who look after the kid, all the years but the rest of the story is about how Sambaiah sets things right in his life.
Performances:
Chiranjeevi is highly believable as the cobbler , entrepreneur, a loving husband and a strict parent to his sister’s son. His histrionics are worth to admire and the way he acted in emotional scenes is another highlight. Vijayashanthi is perfect as the innocent rural belle who falls head over heels on Chiranjeevi. The dialogue delivery of her tagline “Atta Choodamakayya” became a trademark in Telugu Cinema. Sumalatha is wonderful as the initial love interest of Chiranjeevi and then a responsible housewife to Benarjee. Charan Raj is excellent as the person who is so cruel that he would negatively influence his own son for the sake of money. Somayajulu, Misro, and the kid Arjun of Masoom fame who played the role of Sambaiah’s nephew were fantastic. It is interesting to see Brahmanandam- a comedy star act in a thought provoking role in this film.
Technical Aspects:
The dialogues and story were written by K.Vishwanath and Jandhyala with amazing perfection. The conversations are crisp and life learning lessons. Music by Ramesh Naidu is another asset for the film as it gave the film a native look in every respect. Songs like Para Hushar, Siggu Poobanthi, Chinni Chinni became all time hits. Direction by K.Vishwanath is picture perfect as usual- which made him an ideal director not only for art films but also films dealing with social issues and life lessons.
