Sindhu Bhairavi story at a glance

K.Balachander has always been different in his style of film making and creating strong woman characters throughout his film directing career. Suhasini is one actress who got the great break from this legendary director with the film Sindhu Bhairavi starring opposite Sivakumar, father of Surya and Karthi. This eternal classic film fetched Ilaiyaraaja the national award for best music director and brought K.S.Chitra, the fantastic playback singer to the world of Telugu Cinema.

Story Details:
JKB (Sivakumar) is a proud yet talented classical vocal performer who has only one thought in mind- that is Music. His natural talent in performing the most complex ragas is one asset he has and he doesn’t spare indiscipline in his music team. In one instant, his mridangam(Delhi Ganesh) player comes for the concert drunk, and a furious JKB stops him from playing for the show and sings without percussion support. This shows the strong personality of him. JKB’s wife Bhairavi (Sulakshana) is an innocent woman who has no idea about music or art field. Naturally, JKB feels irritated with his wife’s lack of understanding about music. In one dramatic situation, he meets Sindhu (Suhasini) in his own concert where the latter questions him about singing such complex compositions which people can neither rejoice or enjoy. JKB gets too furious with her when she performs a song ‘Paadalenu Pallavaina’ with simple lyrics in carnatic style and after few misunderstandings, he realizes that Sindhu is more like his counterpart with respect to music. She is a loner who is obsessed with music and performers. JKB starts meeting Sindhu and even takes some of her suggestions in becoming a better performer. Bhairavi doesn’t like the close association and to make things worse, JKB falls in love with Sindhu. At one instant they become very close and Sindhu realizes she is pregnant. When Sindhu comes to know that Bhairavi cannot conceive children, she decides to keep her pregnancy. An upset Bhairavi takes an oath from her husband saying that he should never meet Sindhu again. JKB’s fall starts from then, as he becomes addicted to drinking and stoops to such a low state that he sings in a drinks party. Bhairavi realizes the importance of Sindhu in her husband’s life and they both reform JKB into a normal person. What happens next forms the rest of the story.

Performances:
This film can be termed as one of the lifetime best performances of Sivakumar as an actor. His emotional range is phenomenal and he outperforms as a staunch classical musician who settles for nothing but best. He does great as the passionate lover, a considerate husband and a drunk musician later. Saikumar’s dubbing for his role is another asset. Suhasini is amazing as Sindhu, a loner yearning for love and who yet has responsibility towards JKB. She looks brilliant in simple attire and her performance gets better as film reaches climax. Saritha’s dubbing for her is another asset. Sulakshana, who earlier was seen in Vishwanath’s Subhodayam gets a good role as innocent Bhairavi who has unconditional love for her husband. Delhi Ganesh and Janakaraj are great in the roles of mridangam player and tanpura player respectively. Pratap Pothan gets an interesting role as the silent lover of Sindhu at work.

Technical Aspects:
K.Balachander succeeded in creating crystal clear characterizations for the film involving art, drama, social responsibility and love. The bigger aspects of Art such as carnatic singing which should be understood to common public was touched greatly by him. The scene where Sindhu questions JKB in the auditorium about singing in less complex way became the most defining moments of Art Cinema. Music by Ilaiyaraaja is at his personal best with some brilliant classical songs. He got tremendous scope in re-recording as well. Songs like Paadalenu Pallavaina and Nenoka Sindhu became all time hits.
