Iddaru Mitrulu is a trendsetter for double role films in Telugu Cinema. Though the basic storyline was based on a Bengali film Tasheed Ghar, it was wonderfully made suitable for native audience with gripping screenplay. It is not made just for the sake of double role film but with great clarity on showing two similar looking people’s lives in parallel. The screenplay of this film is called as a standard by many film critics.
Story Details:
Ajay (ANR) belongs to an affluent family and their property matters are looked after by Bhanoji(Gummadi). Ajay is a happy go lucky individual who doesn’t take responsibility seriously and spends his life with drinking, entertainment , music and dance. One fateful night he happens to meet a person Vijay (ANR) who tries to commit suicide by falling over his car. The interesting feature is that Vijay looks exactly like Ajay. Ajay takes Vijay to a hotel room and asks him why he wanted to end his life. Vijay explains his life problems which are filled with poverty and family problems to Ajay. Ajay is a person who doesn’t know about human relationships though he has money. Seeing all this, he devises a plan. He plans to change roles with Vijay and they go their counterpart’s houses. While Ajay solves the poverty and family issues in Vijay’s family- Vijay understands the property cheating happening in Ajay’s house and solves it. In the course of time Ajay and Vijay also get successful in their love lives and marry the women Meena (Saroja) and Sarala (Rajasulochana) respectively.
Performances:
ANR is excellent in both roles with differing body language and histrionics for the relaxed affluent guy and the troubled guy also. His acting skills come of great help for such an interesting film. He literally became a trendsetter for ample number of films featuring Double action which came later. Gummadi is at his best as usual as Bhanoji and Ramana Reddy played the role of Vijay’s father at ease. Sarada played the role of Vijay’s sister and she plays it off well.
Technical Aspects:
Veteran lyricist Dasaradhi made his debut with this film though it was Vagdanam which was his first worked film. Selvaraj’s photography for showing two ANRs on the same screen was something like a miracle those days and adds so much value to the film. S.Rajeshwara Rao’s music and Adurthi Subbarao’s Direction make this film stand out as one unique Double role films in Telugu Cinema.
