Rojulu Maarayi is the first film which features ANR and Shaavukaru Janaki as a lead pair and the film was a remarkable hit. This film had the debut of Bollywood talented actress Waheeda Rahman on the silver screen. She can be seen in the popular number ‘Eruvaaka Saagaro’ as a dancer in the film. The same rhythm section was used for another Bollywood film ‘Bombay Ka Babu’ by veteran composer S.D.Burman. This is the second film of Taapi Chanakya as a director. In fact, the film has traces with the film Raithu Bidda which was made by the same production house. It was dubbed in Tamil as Kaalam Maripocchu and became a tremendous hit there as well.
Story Details:
Kotaiah (Perumallu) is a sincere poor farmer who is an idealist. His son Venu (ANR) is a hardworking yet active youngster. Kotaiah’s daughter is Bharati (Ammaji). Venu plans to marry his sister to a progressive idealist Gopalam (Vallam Narasimha Rao) who happens to be the former’s friend. A young and dynamic woman Radha (Shaavukaru Janaki) , who is the daughter of an ex colonel arrives in the village. Venu and Radha meet with tantrums initially but fall in love eventually. Sagaraiah (Relangi) is a greedy pawn broker who exploits the farmers by lending money and snatching interests. The village’s Karanam (Ramana Reddy) is his right hand. Kotaiah’s family also gets affected as a result of this exploitation. He even plans to make Venu a servant in his house. He grabs Kotaiah’s agricultural lands by sending hired goons. In troubled situations, Kotaiah is forced to marry his daughter to an old man, which is stopped by Venu in the last minute and gets his sister married to Gopalam. Rest of the story is about how Venu, Radha, Bharati and Gopalam teach a lesson to Sagaraiah.
Performances:
ANR is extremely believable as the village youngster with idealist attitude. His body language is a treat to watch. Shaavukaru Janaki is wonderful as the bold woman who doesn’t stop looking at injustice. She shares a striking chemistry with her co-star ANR. She excels in emotional scenes with ease. Relangi is extremely good as the pawn broker. Perumallu gets a good role as Kotaiah. Ramana Reddy does his best as the sycophantic Karanam. Ammaji and Vallam Narasimha Rao are adequate as the second lead pair.
Technical Aspects:
Dialogues by popular writer Taapi Dharma Rao are thought provoking and entertaining. He has a great wit in his lines which appeal instantly to everyone alike. Lyrics by Kosaraju and Taapi Dharma Rao are worth commending. Master Venu’s melodious music reflects the pristine village life. Apart from Eruvaka Sagaro, Idhiye Haayi, Kalupumu Cheyi, Oliyo Oli, Maaraja Vinavayya became all time hits.
