Sirish (Allu Sirish) and Suvarna (Regina) are two selfish individuals who work for a TV Channel. Though Sirish is surrounded by friends,he is a guy who is self centered and has aspirations to make big money. Though miser enough, Suvarna cares about the people around her. Ramesh (Rao Ramesh), the TV Channel head identifies the talents of these two and makes them into one team to work on making the channel more popular.
In the interim, Sirish gets another lucrative offer from a business man (Posani Krishna Murali) who plans to start another TV Channel but on the condition that he should come along as a team with Suvarna. When Suvarna doesn’t agree to come along with him, Sirish fakes his love towards Suvarna. What problems does Sirish get into because of his fake love and how does it affect their careers forms the remaining story.
Allu Sirish: Though he has the looks of boy next door, Sirish needs to work on grooming up his acting skills. His acting was mediocre in the film and his body language was stiff throughout. We can only hope to see more better performances from Sirish with his future films.
Regina: It was a revelation to see Regina’s performance in the movie. She fitted perfectly for the role and her expressions were flawless. She excelled as a cheerful and lively TV anchor in the first half and did equally well in a role filled with emotions in second half. She is a genuine talent and can perform even better in more challenging roles.
Sapthagiri: Good to see him grow as a comedian with each film. He looks natural and completely at ease in his role in this film. He was used well to generate humor in the first half but was wasted in the second half.
Posani: It was another typical role for him in this movie and he partly entertains.
Rohini: Though she did a short character of Hero’s mother, her presence forms the main catalyst towards the end of the movie.
There were many other small time actors in the movie and all of them did well.
Maruthi is known to direct films which are of low budget and less prominent cast. The story is about what happens when two selfish people fall in love and he chose the conflict of careers to portray this. The premise was well set for the movie but plot was not gripping enough. The first half passes of well, but a lackluster story and forced comedy in second half makes the movie weak. The screenplay is fast and moves on at a good pace hence becoming the saving grace for the movie.
Merits:
-> An impressive premise and neatly written characters form a good base for the movie.
-> Promising performances from all the actors, especially the leading lady Regina Cassandra. She is a treat to watch and totally dominates the movie with her screen presence.
-> Well written dialogs with sharp one liners bring out a smile.
-> An engaging and a fast paced screenplay doesn't make you feel bored of the movie.
Demerits:
-> The movie would been even better if it had a much better story. There were lot of unnecessary elements which were added that does not bring any value to the movie.
-> The love story between the lead pair does not look convincing and hence does not add any emotion value towards the end of the film.
-> Lack of good content hampers the second half making it very predictable. The humor in second half may not appeal to all the audience.
Music by upcoming music director JB is one of the plus points of the film.”Osi Prema Rakshasi” was shot beautifully in the movie along with “Charminar Galli”. ”Gundello” is one of the best songs in the movie, but a bad placement of the song defeats the purpose. It was great to see JB using the snippets of “Arere” as the background music in the second half.
Cinematography by Richard Prasad is the highlight of the movie. The entire look, color and locations of the film are bright and lively, making the movie look pleasing to eyes. Editing by Ashok Kuruba is good and Dialogs were well written too. Kudos to production values by Geetha Arts for presenting the film richly on screen.
Kotha Janta is a movie with interesting story and ample scope for entertainment. The movie fails to create an impact because of a lackluster story and unappealing humor. Kotha janta is a one time watch for its promising performance from Regina and a brilliant cinematography by Richard Prasad.
