Vijay (Gopichand) will be chased by a gang of goons about his whereabouts. Vijay manages to escape from them and finally lands in Kolkatta. He joins in a college as student. There he romances with a student Swetha (Anushka). Vijay helps financially another student Divya (Poonam Kaur) but there is a mysterious flashback behind it. Who is Vijay, what is his story and how is he related to Divya forms the rest of the story.
The movie really appealed to the masses and the sentiment too worked. The film got positive response from the audience and especially masses gave a hit talk to the film
A realtor based in Hyderabad owned the first cassette of the film’s album for Rs. 80,000/-. The producer said that he will be using this amount for the welfare of poor students.
In the audio launch itself, Gopichand presented a cheque for "unspecified amount" to Hyderabad-based badminton player James, as part of sponsoring his trip to Jordon for taking part in a tournament.
Director Siva after preparing the script narrated the story to 100 people and asked for their response.
The film was dubbed and released in Malayalam with same title and in Hindi as Meri Shapath. The film has remade into Kannada as Shourya with Darshan and Madalasa Sharma, and into Tamil by Prabhu Deva as Vedi with Vishal and Sameera Reddy in the lead roles.
Prabhudeva is also considering of remaking the film in Bollywood with Salman. However, this project is yet to be confirmed.
