Neelakantam (Prakash Raj) is a well-respected man in a village. His elder daughter Subba Lakshmi (Poonam Bajwa) elopes with a guy called Babu. Neelakantam hates love marriages and he kidnaps few friends of Babu to track down his daughter. Krishna (Allu Arjun), a happy go-lucky guy is one of them. When they start torturing them to tell the whereabouts of the lovers, Krishna falls in love with Meena (Sheela), the younger daughter of Neelakantam. What happens next forms the rest of the story.

Director Bhaskar had just delivered a blockbuster hit in the form of Bommarillu. And on the other side Allu Arjun had earned good following for himself in youth. When both of them joined hands, the expectations on the movie were on high. The movie did not satisfy everyone and finally ended up as an average grosser.

This was the first combination of Allu Arjun and director Bhaskar.
Sheela, the heroine of the movie had acted in three other movies before this Seethakoka Chiluka, Raju Bhai and Hello Premistara. But Parugu was the turning point in her career.

Premikudu, Romeo, Enta Ghaatu Premayo, Araku and Varadhi were the initial rumored titles of the movie during the movie’s production.
This film was dubbed into Malayalam as Krishna and was a blockbuster in Kerala too. It was remade in Bengali as Shedin Dekha Hoyechilo, directed by Sujit Mondal and in Oriya as Sanju Aau Sanjana, directed by Ashok Pati.
During the movie production, there was a strong rumor that the movie is about the story of Chiranjeevi’s eloped daughter and her lover Sirish Bhardwaj which rather went diluted eventually.
