Swayamvaram is the story of two people who initially hate each other's guts but eventually fall in love with one another. Venu (Venu) is a very straight forward and is the only son of a rich businessman. He does everything as his wish and will. Anu (Laya) is a sweet girl and an aspiring singer. They meet very often through a common friend, Bose.
Bose is in deep love with Anu but the later does not reciprocate those feelings, instead she falls in love with Venu. Bose, being very understanding, agrees to their relation. However, Venu has some inhibitions about marriage and they play spoilsport in taking their love to next level. What happens next is the crux of the story.
Trade
Swayamvaram was released by the makers through Suresh distributors on risk basis. With some good publicity, the movie opened well and went to do extremely well as the mouth talk spread. Swayamvaram was first released with 14 prints and then prints were increased to 35. It had a slight set back because of Chiranjeevi's Iddaru Mitrulu in the second week. But it again picked up from 3rd week onwards to become a 100 days film.
Highlights
This was the first combination of Trivikram Srinivas (as a Writer) and director Vijaya Bhaskar. Later on they delivered several sensational films.
Swayamvaram is the first and only combination movie of Venu and Vijaya Bhaskar. Venu except for a couple of films could not progress well in his career.
Sidelights
Even though Laya is a Telugu girl. Her voice was not used for dubbing as she was too young for the role.
Ram Prasad was supposed to direct Swayamvaram but he was committed to B.Gopal as co-director for Samara Simha Reddy. So, the makers chose Vijaya Bhaskar to direct the movie.
