Overview

In an industry increasingly reliant on sentiments than performance, stars rather than actors and entertainment rather than sense, it is hard to put a finger on reasons for success. For a period of two years the totem for success in Telugu Film industry went by the name Samantha. Her mere presence in a film guaranteed success. It still does. That her purple patch lasted so long and came to end with Jabardasth was no surprise. The run was too good to be sustained for a long time and it had to end at some point. Producers swear by her because her remuneration doesn’t fluctuate much. With her repertoire of films in hand, she can reach the dizzying heights reserved for the so called ‘once in a generation’ actor.

  • Personal Life

Samantha Ruth Prabhu popular known as Samantha was born on April 28, 1987 with a mixed background of Telugu and Tamil. She completed her schooling from Holy Angels Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School, T. Nagar and graduated with a commerce degree from Stella Maris College, Chennai.

She hails from Chennai and is from a family that had nothing to do with movies. Before entering the film industry, she modelled in Chennai. Her interview last year created a furore as she said that she was in love with a man from the film industry. She was told to be eyeing Hero Siddharth. Both of them do not admit that directly but are always seen together.

  • Career

Ye Maaya Chesaave was her debut movie. Her portrayal of Jessie came in for wide appreciation from all quarters. She played a confused girl in the movie and with the director’s penchant for close up shots, she left an indelible impression on the audience with her eyes.

Brindavanam was a commercial movie and she was one of the two heroines in the movie. Coming after Ye Maaya Chesaave, her glamorous turn in the movie was a surprise to many. That was the sort of first impression she created on the audience. This movie did a world of good to her advancement as a commercial film heroine.

Dookudu changed her life forever. Her episodes with Mahesh Babu evoked laughter and her dance was also noticed for the first time in her career. Her chemistry with Mahesh Babu was appreciated and landed her a second starring role with him.

Who would’ve thought that she would star in two blockbusters in a row?

Eega was the movie that catapulted her fame to the stratosphere. That her presence in the movie guarantees success gained credence from the box office run of this movie. In a movie that had a graphically created house fly as the protagonist, she plays the reason why the protagonist bays for the blood of the antagonist.

Yeto Vellipoyyindhi Manasu was her second movie with a starring role with Gautam Menon. She sort of reprised her role from her debut movie as a confused girl. The movie was a commercial success only because of the acting chops displayed by Nani and Samantha.

Seethama Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu was her second movie with Mahesh Babu. She played her character with ease but was overshadowed by the roles of other protagonists who had author backed roles. Her ‘Bonga moothi’ expression is the thing that would be remembered for a long time.

Jabardasth landed her the first flop in a glittering career. A rip-off of the popular Bollywood movie, Band Baja Baraat, the movie landed itself in a soup the day it released. With garrulous characterisations and an over the top narrative, the movie failed to strike a chord with the audience.

Then came Pawan Kalyan's Attarintiki Daredi. The movie's release was hit by political turmoil and then it became a headlines as the piracy of it was out before movie's official release. Despite the piracy hurdle the movie went on to become a big hit and is expected to touch 100 crores.

Ramayya Vastavayya, paired with Jr NTR for the second time. She was seen in the role of Akarsha, a bit traditional. But the movie disapponted, as it had too many action episodes in the second half. This is second flop for so called 'Golden Lady' in the year 2013.

2014 was a mixed bag for Samantha. She had a super success with Manam, Alludu Seenu. But there are bad experiences as well with the failures like Autonagar Surya and Rabhasa. Samantha has delivered one of the finest performances in Manam. She had similar results in Tamil too where she is trying for a long time to establish her foot hold. She paired up with Suriya and Vijay in two big ticket films. Suriya's Anjaan was a big flop and Vijay's Kaththi was a good hit.

She started off 2015 with a decent hit like Son of Satyamurthy and is gearing up to score yet another with Chiyaan Vikran with Tamil movie 10 Endrathukulla.

  • Trivia

Samantha has endorsed various brands like Coke Cola, South India Shopping Mall, Dabur Vatika Hair Oil, Chik Shampoo, Gokul Sandiva, Big C Mobiles, Saravana Stores and Odonil Room Freshening Gel.

  • Upcoming Movies

    • 10 Endrathukulla with Chiyaan Vikram to be directed by Vijay Milton.
    • 24 starring Surya to be directed by Manam fame Vikram K Kumar
    • Untitled Project featuring Dhanush under the direction of Velraj
    • Though there are speculations that she will feature in Allu Arjun-Boyapati Srinu project and Naga Chaitanya's upcoming film, no other Telugu film has been announced yet.
