Overview

Off late, NRIs have been venturing in to film direction and production but very few seem to have patience to stay here and try their luck until they succeed. Praveen Sattaru belongs to such rare breed.

  • Personal Life

    Praveen Sattaru hails from a typical Telugu family in Andhra Pradesh. After completing his Engineering in EEE stream from Madras University, he trained himself in GRE and TOFEL and managed to get a US Visa. He completed his Masters in Chip Designing in USA.

    He worked almost for 10 years in USA and was employed with IBM as SAP Consultant when he ventured in to films.

  • Career

    Praveen says he used to have several friends from other states during his stay in US. Whenever they talk of films, he used to end up with K.Vishwanath and Ram Gopal Varma’s films. He then felt the dearth of good films in Telugu and started penning scripts on his own. He first wanted to produce films and approached RGV and Vishwanath but could not rope them in. After so much of thought he decided to direct his scripts.

    Praveen Sattaru completed most of the shooting of his first film LBW – Life Before Wedding in US and returned to India and shot some portions of the movie in Hyderabad. Once the first copy was ready, he had to realize that things were totally upstream to him. He found it extremely tough to release the film and market it. He could not get theaters or shows in Multiplex to release the movie. He made a mistake of releasing the movie on Youtube for countries where Telugu movies do not release. The HD pirated copy came on net and everybody saw it on their computers even before the movie released in theaters. But in that way at least the movie reached people and he got brownie points for the movie.

    Praveen went back to US and transferred his job with IBM from US to India. He later worked on a film, Routine Love Story starring Sundeep Kishan and Regina Cassandra. This time he learnt the tricks of the trade and managed to get decent release for the movie.  The movie ended up an average grosser at the box office.

    Sattaru is currently working on his next film, Chandamama Kathalu. He got inspired the movie title from famous Telugu comic book, Chandamama. The movie stars Krishnudu, Chaitanya Krishna, Lakshmi Prasanna, Naresh, Sowmya Bollapragada, Naga Showri, and Aamani and others in important roles. 

  • Trivia

    • Unlike most NRI directors, Praveen Sattaru does not have any film school experience before directing LBW. He says he did not even touch camera until he directed LBW.
