After completing his animation courses, he joined DQ Entertainment International. He worked for several Hollywood films and creates story boards for them. Like that he developed liking for films. As animation began to find its way to Telugu film industry too, Maruthi came closer to Tollywood. He became a good friend of Bunny Vas (Producer of 100% Love) and began investing small amounts in films as co-producers.
Maruthi also invested money in Sekhar Suri’s A film by Aravind and was with the movie unit in the last 10 days shooting of the movie. Maruthi says that he learned how not to make a movie in those days as lot of money literally got wasted for no reason. The movie was a big hit but Maruthi could not recover his money. So, he went back to his work and stayed away from films.
In 2008, he got a call from Megastar Chiranjeevi to design flag for Praja Rajyam Party. Chiru liked his work immensely and Maruthi was entrusted the job of taking care of entire publicity material designing of the party. Once the election fever subsided, he is at cross roads once again.
Finally inspired by Ram Gopal Varma’s Dongala Muta, Maruthi bought himself few digital cameras and worked with them. He set off to make a film with 50 Lakhs budget. Thus Ee Rojullo was made in some 30-40 working days and the movie went on to become a big hit. However Maruthi also drew flak for too much of vulgarity in the movie.
Later he directed ‘Bus Stop’ film for Bellamkonda Suresh. He promised to make the film in 2 Crores but completed it in 1.75 Crores. And it also did well commercially. His third film, Prema Katha Chitram was made in Maruthi’s own production again. He only supervised the direction department. The film went on to become a smashing hit again. Off late Maruthi co-produced films like Mahesh, Romance, Villa, Love You Bangaram and Lovers. Out of which, Lovers is a Success in terms of Return on Investment.
His most recent film, Kotha Janta with Allu Sirish despite getting average talk and reviews went on to become a decent hit commercially.
Maruthi ran in to controversy with his recent film, Radha. A young writer Surendra Krishna alleges that he along with his director friend, Satish approached Venkatesh with the script of an MLA and a love story. He alleged that Venkatesh stole the script and passed it on to Maruthi. The script was changed MLA to Home Minister and the project is now Radha. The issue is currently in Writers' Association but Venkatesh has cancelled the project.
