Gowtham Menon belongs to the rare breed of directors we have today that focuses on the human relationships and sensibilities in his films. Also he is one of the very few directors who enjoy fame and name across various languages.
Gowtham was born on 25 February 1973 in Ottapalam, Kerala. His father is a Malayali father and Tamil mother. He spent most of his childhood in Trichy, Tamil Nadu. Gowtham Menon completed his Mechanical Engineering in Mookambigai College of Engineering, Trichy.
Gowtham Menon married Preethi, his childhood friend. Arya, Dhuruva and Aathyan are their three children.
As Director:
Gowtham Menon started his career in Tamil with O Lala in 2000. The project after some many initial hiccups changed the title into Minnale. The movie was a good success. Gowtham Menon rose to fame in Telugu with Gharshana starring Venkatesh and Asin in 2004. The movie was a decent hit then. His next film, Vettaiyaadu Vellayaadu starring Kamal Hassan was dubbed in to Telugu as Raghavan. The movie however did not fare well in AP.
Three years later, Gowtham Menon made a strong comeback with Ye Maaya Chesave starring Naga Chaitanya and Samantha. The film went on to become biggest hit in Naga Chaitanya’s career and also gifted a star like Samantha to South film industry. The film was simultaneously made and releases in Tamil as Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa starring Simbu and Trisha and is also a success there. Gowtham Menon also worked on the Hindi remake of the film, Ek Deewana Tha but it did not work out there.
In 2012, Gowtham Menon attempted one more bilingual, Yem Maaya Chesave (Neethane En Ponvasantham in Tamil). Nani and Jeeva played the male leads in Telugu and Tamil while Samantha played female lead in the both. However the movie failed to set the cash registers ringing.
As Producer:
Gowtham Menon also produces films occasionally. In Telugu, he produced Nani’s Sega and is currently producing Nithin’s yet to be released, Courier Boy Kalyan.
