Makers Take out controversial scene and word regarding Bawariya Tribe from the Telugu movie “Khakee”

With the recent outrage and threats regarding the release of Indian epic period drama “Padmavati”, there comes another stirring controversy surrounding the Telugu movie “Khakee”. It looks like that it a very difficult task to make a movie in India without creating any wrangle.

Khakee or “Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru” is a thriller and a crime film, starred by Karthi, which hit the theatres on November 16th, 2017. Although the movie is doing very well on the box-office, some of the scenes and dialogues were deleted by the makers of the movie on the pretext that they hurt the sentiments of a section of audience. The depiction of Bawariya Tribe as a criminal clan was taken to be offensive by its viewers. In particular, the word ‘Kuttrapparambarai’ has received a stiff opposition.

The movie is set up in 1995-2005 period wherein a group of dacoits believed to be coming from the notorious criminal tribe Bawariya committed a series of heinous atrocities and crimes which were subsequently investigated by the Tamil Nadu Police. The outrage from the public was seen because the tribe was shown as a criminal clan and as a consequence of which the makers of the movie had to delete the scenes and dialogues from the film.

The makers in their clarification statement defended that the movie is solely based on the robbery incidents that took place in various Indian states. The film has not painted any community in a bad light as no community can thrive only on robbery and murder. The makers apologized for hurting people’s sentiments and claimed that was completely an unintentional take with no harm intended towards any section of the society. They also stated that the disputed scene will no longer be included in theatres and television broadcast or on any official online streaming portals.
