Film criticism
As long as films have existed, so has its criticism and appreciation. Critics analyse and evaluate films and their medium. While there is the regular journalistic criticism that appears in newspapers, and also the academic criticism which appear in academic journals by film scholars. It is the journalistic criticism that the audience connects with. It reflects the mass culture, and at the same time, it also helps the mass to determine its idea about the film. On the other hand, the academic criticism is what analyses a film from the point of technicality, art, etc., and seals its fate in the history of cinema.
What critics consider
While criticising a film, a critic has to consider a lot of things. A very important point of consideration is the background and history against which the film is being made, as well as the evolution of the film makers and cast and crew members involved in the making of the film. It is irrelevant to consider every other film in the same genre of the film and then start comparing them with respect to every detail. When it comes to Telugu movies, true critics understand that Telugu films are completely different from Hindi or Tamil movies, and they rate and criticize the films accordingly.
How film criticism is important in Telugu film industry
The criticism of a film helps the audience decide whether or not to go and watch a film. It gives them a notion about the film, and also helps them make up their mind about the film. Simultaneously, it also reflects the true mentality of the mass. While writing a review, a critic takes into consideration his own opinion about as well as the idea about the likes and dislikes of the larger section of the film buffs. There is a huge fan following of the Telugu films, and it can be said that critics have played a large part in the huge popularity of the cinema, not just in Andhra Pradesh but in other regions of India as well. Telugu films form a genre that is not like any other genre. It uses technology, a good story line, action, romance, and a lot of other things. A critic of Telugu films has to understand when the aspects used in the film are going overboard, and when it is the right mix. However, it is also true that reviews are not the ultimate judge the potential of a film. Sometimes, reviews are written in the spur of the moment, and the critic might revisit his first opinion after watching the film again.
