Chanti is one unique film in Venkatesh’s career as a fine actor. The film was commercially equipped with sentiment, characterizations, comedy, and songs in one side but had some different elements also in it. After a long time in Tollywood, Venkatesh was the one actor who was ready to act in a mellowed down innocent hero role, at an age when Heroism with macho nature, and entertaining values were admired more. This film marked the hit on screen pair Venkatesh- Meena on Telugu Silver Screen.
Story Details:
There exists a rich Zamindar family comprising of three young brothers. They happen to have an orphaned little sister Nandini and for that reason they are excessively pampering towards her after their parents demise. One such situation occurs when the horoscope of Nandini is discussed with a pandit. The pandit tells the brothers that Nandini will marry somebody against their will which obviously angers the brothers. They take a hard decision of keeping Nandini in the house itself, and whatever needed for her would come to the home. Chanti is a kid from the village and his father was a singer before the demise. Chanti inherits the singing talent from his father but he is a very innocent person. He doesn’t know about the ways of the World much and this is a cause of concern for his mother (Sujatha). Nandini grows up to young age (Meena) and Chanti becomes elder as well( Venkatesh). A grown up Nandini feels trapped in the home and after few cinematic incidents she starts admiring Chanti. The turning point occurs when Nandini casually asks Chanti to tie the “Thaali” onto her neck and the latter does it apparently not realizing the meaning of it. Rest of the story is about how Nandini manages to hide the truth from her brothers and what happens to their relationship.
Performances:
Venkatesh excels as the innocent guy who is unaware of Worldly matters. His histrionics and body language suited perfectly for the role. He showed many emotions throughout his character’s progress- Happiness, Sadness, Anger, Love, Worry and so on. Meena is ideal as the lady who is trapped in the midst of riches and the care of her brothers. Her acting in emotional scenes where she is stuck between Love for her brothers and Chanti was brilliant. Meena’s performance in the song “Oh Prema” which comes in the climax itself is a great example of her acting skills. Sujatha is adequate as the mother of Chanti and Nazzar plays the role of Nandini’s elder brother with ease. Brahmanandam offers some good comedy relief. Manjula, another veteran actress played the role of Nazzar’s wife in the film.
Technical Aspects:
The story of the film was penned by P.Vasu, an ace writer from Tamil Cinema. It is purely a village based story with good commercial and sentimental values. The emotional quotient of the film was well handled. Music by Ilaiyaraaja is a huge asset for the film. All the songs suit the theme perfectly and became huge hits. Oh Prema (Both the versions), Paavuraniki Panjaraniki, Annula Minnala, Jabiliki Vennelaki still remain to be highly popular. K.S.Rama Rao made sure the film was having high production values and direction by Ravi Raja Pinisetty is apt for a film like this.
